Exercise for cancer

Research from Cancer Research UK confirms that exercise can help people during and after their treatment improve fatigue, quality of life and general physical functioning. It can also help to reduce anxiety and improve depression which are common among cancer patients.

Types of exercise recommended during and post-cancer treatment

Aerobic exercise

Low-impact activities like walking, swimming and cycling all improve cardio-respiratory fitness which can help improve energy levels and reduce fatigue. If you’re feeling tired, we suggest shorter exercise sessions with manageable intensity – aiming for a pace where you can still talk comfortably.

Strength training

Using weights, resistance bands or bodyweight to strengthen muscles, bones and joints that may weaken during cancer treatment. This not only makes daily tasks easier but also improves mental well-being.

Balance training

Dance, Tai Chi and Yoga are all effective forms of exercise to improve balance and so prevent falls risk onto potentially fragile bones. These exercise styles may be especially beneficial on days when fatigue is more intense.

Kind words from our clients

"I was diagnosed last year with breast cancer at 36 and I needed to undergo chemotherapy, radiotherapy and possibly surgery. I knew I wanted to improve my health and fitness and keep as active as possible throughout my treatment but wasn't sure where to start. I began exercise training with Longevity a few weeks later and it was the best decision I made for my journey. I've had set backs along the way, and through some difficult times, but I'm now stronger and fitter than I was before, and the accountability of the sessions kept me positive throughout this process. They really listened to my ever-changing needs and were so accommodating to adapt the exercises to how I was feeling and the stage of my treatment cycles. I could not have asked for more!"
