Exercise for cancer

Research from Cancer Research UK confirms that exercise can help people both during and after their treatment to improve fatigue, quality of life and general physical function. It can also help to reduce anxiety and improve depression which are common among cancer patients.

Types of exercise recommended during and post-cancer treatment

Cardiovascular

Exercise that increases your heart rate, including walking, swimming and cycling, can all improve your cardiorespiratory fitness and help manage energy and fatigue. If you’re feeling tired, you can break your exercise up into smaller bouts with manageable intensity. Aim for a pace where you can still talk comfortably.

Strength

Exercises that use weights or resistance bands can help strengthen your muscles, bones and joints that may weaken during cancer treatment. Squats, push-ups and glute bridges are some great options. This can assist with making daily activities easier while also improving mental well-being.

Balance

With decreases in both bone and muscle strength being a common side effect of cancer treatment, balance exercises are important to decrease the risk of falls and fractures. Specific balance exercises, including heel-to-toe walking and single-leg stance, or activities including dancing and Tai Chi, are all effective ways to improve balance.

Kind words from our clients

"I was diagnosed last year with breast cancer at 36 and I needed to undergo chemotherapy, radiotherapy and possibly surgery. I knew I wanted to improve my health and fitness and keep as active as possible throughout my treatment but wasn't sure where to start. I began exercise training with Longevity a few weeks later and it was the best decision I made for my journey. I've had set backs along the way, and through some difficult times, but I'm now stronger and fitter than I was before, and the accountability of the sessions kept me positive throughout this process. They really listened to my ever-changing needs and were so accommodating to adapt the exercises to how I was feeling and the stage of my treatment cycles. I could not have asked for more!"
