Jennifer
Jennifer, aged 36, came to Longevity Health and Fitness during her breast cancer treatment, following a mastectomy. At the time, her biggest challenges were knowing how to safely begin exercising again and rebuilding confidence in moving her arm and shoulder. Like many people navigating cancer treatment, she wanted to feel that she was actively doing something positive for her health, while also supporting her recovery from surgery.
From the outset, our work together focused on the bigger picture. We took time to understand Jennifer’s previous exercise experience, her current treatment demands, and what she hoped to gain from exercise during this period. Early sessions centred on floor-based mobility and gentle strength exercises, with an emphasis on rebuilding movement, improving strength endurance, and creating a calm, reassuring reintroduction to exercise.
Each session was carefully adapted based on how Jennifer felt that day. We recognised early on that cancer treatment and its side effects are rarely linear, meaning progress sometimes needed to pause or shift. When symptoms were more challenging, exercises were adjusted or regressed to ensure she could continue moving safely without overexertion, while still gaining benefit from consistent activity.
Over time, we gradually introduced light strength work aimed at restoring shoulder and arm function following her surgery. Within the first 12 weeks, Jennifer made excellent progress and reported feeling noticeably more confident in her movement. Across the following months, she achieved full restoration of arm and shoulder mobility, regained strength and function, and established a consistent routine that supported her recovery.
Now, nine months on, Jennifer continues to engage in weekly one-to-one sessions and completes her home exercises three times per week. Exercise has become a reliable part of her routine, helping her feel stronger, more energised, and more in control of her health during a challenging period. Her journey highlights the importance of flexibility, individualised support, and consistency when using exercise to support recovery through cancer treatment.
