Deirbhile
Deirbhile, aged 67, came to Longevity Health and Fitness seeking support for ongoing lower back pain related to osteoarthritis. Her pain was beginning to affect everyday activities and reduce her confidence with movement. One of her biggest concerns was the possibility of having to give up gardening, an activity that brings her both enjoyment and a sense of independence.
Deirbhile’s main goal was to manage her back pain effectively, maintain her independence, and continue gardening and daily tasks with greater comfort and confidence. She wanted to feel stronger and more capable in her body, without fear that movement would worsen her symptoms.
We worked together through weekly one-to-one clinical exercise sessions in her home. Each session was carefully tailored to how Deirbhile was feeling on the day, with exercises adapted to support safe movement, gradual strengthening and functional activities directly related to her daily life and gardening tasks. This flexible approach allowed progress to be made without pushing beyond her comfort levels.
Over the course of 8 to 12 weeks, Deirbhile noticed clear improvements. Her strength and movement increased, everyday tasks became easier and less uncomfortable, and she regained confidence in her ability to stay active. Importantly, she was able to continue gardening comfortably, something she had previously feared she might have to give up.
During this period, Deirbhile experienced a setback when she developed the flu, which led to increased muscle pain and reduced energy. When returning to exercise, sessions were adapted to reflect her recovery, gradually rebuilding her capacity and ensuring exercises remained appropriate and beneficial.
Deirbhile continues to work with us through regular check-in sessions every few weeks to adapt and progress her home exercise programme as needed. She has shared that the tailored nature of the sessions, combined with the convenience of in-home appointments, has made a real difference to her pain management, movement and overall confidence.
