Andy

Andy is an experienced clinical exercise physiologist at Longevity Health and Fitness. He works with clients with a wide range of conditions, including neurological rehabilitation, cancer prehabilitation/rehabilitation, joint pain, back pain and age-related frailty.

Andy has a wealth of experience working with different conditions within his role at the University of Southampton, where he has developed and run the GP exercise referral scheme. He also set up a cancer prehabilitation/rehabilitation service in conjunction with the University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust, helping patients prepare for surgery as their main treatment option. Andy enjoys working with all medical conditions and people, to understand what their goals are and to use exercise to help them surpass their goals. If he does not have prior experience with a specific condition, Andy makes sure to complete thorough research before starting a session/programme.

The main modalities Andy uses to train patients are mobility training and strength training. He believes these are both fundamental exercise techniques everyone should be using to achieve their goals, and he always educates patients about these fundamental training techniques.

Andy is currently completing a Master of Research, where he is investigating a new exercise treatment option for those with COPD. He hopes this will lead to studying for a PhD in the field of exercise physiology. He has delivered over 50 classes, aiming to help improve people’s mobility and strength over six weeks. Andy is also working on an arthritis research project, designing an exercise protocol for those with inflammatory arthritis.

Passionate about helping people realise their potential, Andy truly believes exercise is medicine, helping patients not only improve their mobility and strength, but also improve their quality of life.

Success stories

Taylor began working with Longevity in their twenties while recovering from a brain injury alongside a spinal fusion. At the start, one of the main challenges was reshaping how Taylor approached training, particularly around frequency, exercise selection, and the value of whole-body movements rather than isolated or overly repetitive exercises.

I was looking for a new high quality personal trainer and a friend found longevity and recommended it to me. They found me an amazing clinical exercise physiologist around my area.

Andy is an amazing clinical exercise physiologist, we talked about what my plans were, what issues and implications I might have and he created a custom plan that included cardio warm up, stretches and exercises. The plan is amazing and his insight has made me realise a lot more about the body and how to perform at the best of my abilities. Andy has also helped me in the gym by showing me the new exercises in the plan, helping me correct my form where it was wrong and causing issues which has helped me enjoy the workouts more. Finally Andy and me have had a laugh and a good few jokes whilst talking and working out which has made the experience a lot more enjoyable, relatable and I can ask him any question and he happily shares his knowledge.
