Melissa
Melissa is 45 and lives with learning difficulties. When she first reached out for support, her biggest barrier wasn’t physical strength or fitness, but a deep fear of using escalators. This phobia meant she was unable to use the London Underground, significantly limiting her independence and confidence when travelling around the city.
Melissa’s goal was clear: she wanted to feel confident going down an escalator and be able to use the tube independently, without fear or avoidance.
Our work together focused on graded exposure, confidence building, and reassurance rather than rushing the process. We began by meeting at a local tube station and breaking the task down into manageable steps. Initially, Melissa practised using the stairs only, allowing her to become familiar with the environment while feeling safe and in control. Alongside this, we worked on positive self-talk, breathing, and reassurance to reduce anxiety and build trust in her ability.
As her confidence grew, we gradually progressed the challenge. This included practising on the stairs alongside escalators, then using the upward escalator first, before eventually attempting the downward escalator. Each step was only introduced once Melissa felt ready, with sessions adapted entirely around her comfort level on the day.
Over the course of five weeks, Melissa successfully overcame her fear and was able to use both upward and downward escalators. The biggest changes weren’t just practical, but emotional. She gained confidence, a strong sense of accomplishment, and belief in her ability to face and overcome fears that had previously felt impossible.
This case highlights how patient, individualised support and gradual progression can lead to meaningful real-world outcomes. For Melissa, overcoming her fear of escalators wasn’t just about transport, it was about independence, confidence, and opening up her ability to navigate the city on her own terms.
