Justine

Justine, aged 80, came to Longevity Health and Fitness following a period of falls, frailty, hip surgery and long-standing osteoarthritis. At the time, she was extremely fearful of movement due to the pain she was experiencing, which had significantly limited her mobility and confidence. Even small day-to-day movements felt daunting, and her world had gradually become much smaller as a result.

Her main goal was simple but meaningful: to walk around her home independently again, and eventually regain the confidence to walk outdoors and return to her weekly draughts class with friends. These social connections were an important motivator and a key part of her quality of life.

We began very gently, focusing on restoring mobility and confidence through small, controlled ranges of movement. Early sessions prioritised safety, reassurance and consistency, helping Justine feel comfortable moving again without fear of pain or falling. She was supported with daily exercises designed to rebuild her base strength and movement capacity, which were vital in laying the foundations for her recovery.

Initially, Justine was seen three times per week, before gradually reducing to twice-weekly sessions as her confidence and ability improved. These sessions provided hands-on support, accountability and progression of her home exercise programme. Complex movements, such as standing up from a chair, were broken down into smaller, achievable components to gradually rebuild strength and range of motion in both her upper and lower limbs.

Within just four to six weeks, Justine was able to stand from her chair with minimal use of her hands and walk from one room to another using a stick, supported by either her practitioner or carer. Over the following six to eight weeks, we focused on increasing her walking and standing tolerance, strengthening her stabilising muscles and improving overall endurance.

Small daily wins became meaningful milestones. Being able to make her own cup of tea and let her dog into the garden independently were huge confidence boosts. As her strength and mobility continued to improve, so did her independence.

Now, eight months on, Justine continues to work on maintaining the strength she lost following surgery and building her overall fitness. She has returned to playing draughts, enjoys walking with friends and family, and is once again able to do her own shopping. Her progress highlights how patient, consistent and individualised support can help rebuild not only physical strength, but confidence, independence and quality of life.
