Sarah
Sarah, in her mid-60s, came to us experiencing ongoing knee and shoulder pain that had gradually started to limit her day-to-day life. Activities she once enjoyed, including swimming, long walks and spending extended time on her feet, had become increasingly difficult, and she found herself avoiding movement for fear of making things worse.
Like many people, she had tried different exercises on her own but struggled to find anything that didn’t aggravate her joints. This left her feeling stuck, unsure what was safe, and frustrated that she couldn’t stay as active as she wanted to be.
Sarah’s goal was simple: to move comfortably again and get back to doing the things she loved, without constantly worrying about pain or setbacks.
We introduced two supervised sessions per week, built around a personalised clinical exercise programme. The focus was on strengthening the muscles supporting her joints, improving movement patterns, and gradually increasing her tolerance to activity, all without triggering flare-ups. This reflects our “exercise is medicine” approach, where programmes are tailored to individual needs, conditions and goals to improve strength, function and confidence safely over time.
Alongside her sessions, Sarah was supported with simple, manageable exercises she could continue independently, helping to build consistency and confidence between sessions.
Over time, Sarah began to notice significant improvements. While her knees and shoulders can still be occasionally niggly, they are far more manageable, and she now understands how to respond to her body and adjust her activity when needed.
She has returned to swimming during the summer, enjoys long walks with friends again, and travels regularly without her joints holding her back. Perhaps most importantly, she has built a consistent and sustainable exercise routine, has regained trust in her body, feels confident in movement again, and has a clear, manageable way to stay active long term.
