Staying active with back pain

It’s tempting to wait and hope back pain eases on its own. But when it lingers, it can start to get in the way of simple things – how you move, sit or enjoy your day.

Gentle, regular movement is one of the best ways to feel lasting relief. By moving a little more (and a little better) you can ease stiffness, build confidence and keep future flare-ups at bay.

Common worries we can help with

Everyone’s back pain feels different, but some challenges come up again and again. We often help clients who:

  • Feel stiff or sore first thing in the morning or after sitting too long
  • Worry that moving or exercising might make things worse
  • Find it harder to stand up, bend or lift without discomfort
  • Have lost confidence after a flare-up, injury or surgery
  • Spend long hours sitting and feel tension building across the back
  • Want to stay active but aren’t sure what’s safe or where to start

Every session is paced to your energy, comfort and confidence that day – helping you move more freely and build strength step by step.

What we work on in sessions

Mobility

We loosen stiffness in the lower back and hips with easy, guided movements. You’ll feel freer, move more smoothly, and take pressure off sore areas over time.

Cardiovascular

Light, low-impact exercise such as walking or cycling helps your back feel better supported and your body more energised. It also improves recovery and sleep, which both help calm pain.

Mind and mood

Strength

We build steady strength through simple, controlled exercises using your bodyweight or light resistance. Stronger muscles mean more support for your back, and fewer flare-ups when life gets busy.

“I was recommended Longevity by my consultant due to spinal stenosis and ongoing back pain. I’ve been suffering with chronic back pain for 15+ years and have seen many physios during this time. I felt I was in need of a different approach to actually build my strength, but this was a new approach for me. I’ve been working with Nadia for the past 12 months who has been superb in understanding my pain, and the effects this has on my day to day. I can say that I am in less daily pain thanks to the exercises and program but most importantly to me, I am able to exercise, lift weights, and feel stronger in myself rather than avoiding certain tasks! Thank you!”

Cliodhna

“Following some months of chronic back pain and fatigue, I decided that a personal trainer might be able to help me: it was one of the wisest decisions I’ve ever made. My trainer comes to my home and over a few weeks has worked through various exercises with me. She has restored my self confidence by improving my posture and sense of balance and encouraging me to set realistic goals and expectations. I have started driving again so I’m able to get out and about a bit more. She is enormously committed to her work and somehow manages to make many of the exercises great fun. I’m looking forward to the weather improving so that we can take walks together”

How our back pain exercise programmes work

A simple plan, steady support and clear progress. We start where you are and build at your pace – at home or online.

Initial consultation and movement check

We’ll chat about how your back feels day to day, your goals, and what’s realistic right now. Then we’ll do a few easy movements in everyday clothes to see what’s comfortable and what needs extra care. Together, we’ll agree on simple priorities for the next few weeks.

Your personal plan

We’ll design a straightforward plan that fits your routine. It includes gentle back mobility work, steady strength building and posture support. You’ll know what’s safe, what to avoid, and what to focus on if things flare up.

One-to-one sessions

Regular 60-minute sessions, weekly or fortnightly. We adapt each one to how you’re feeling that day – progressing gently, never pushing through pain. You’ll learn simple ways to move more comfortably and feel confident lifting, sitting and getting around.

Home practice & check-ins

Short, easy exercises between sessions to keep progress going (no special kit needed). We check in on how you feel and make changes if needed. With your permission, we’ll also keep in touch with your physio, GP, or consultant to ensure everything aligns.

Services for back pain relief

We tailor every plan through clinical exercise, but the right starting point depends on your goals, health and confidence.

Here’s how we can help:

Clinical Exercise

If you’re living with back pain that keeps coming back, we’ll help you ease stiffness, strengthen your core and improve mobility at a pace that feels safe. Ideal for anyone managing long-term pain, arthritis or posture changes.

Senior Personal Training

For adults who want to stay strong, steady and independent while protecting their back. Sessions are joint-friendly and focus on everyday strength, posture, balance and stamina.

Pre- & Post-Surgery Rehabilitation

If you’re preparing for or recovering from back, hip or abdominal surgery, we’ll help you rebuild strength and confidence safely. Gentle movement and progressive strength work reduce strain and support long-term recovery.

Back pain success stories

Cliodhna, aged 64, came to Longevity Health and Fitness following a diagnosis of lumbar spinal stenosis and long-standing lower back pain. At the time, persistent discomfort was affecting her day-to-day movement, and she felt unsure about what exercise was safe to do. Like many people with spinal conditions, she was concerned that the wrong movement could worsen her symptoms or trigger painful flare-ups, leading to a loss of confidence.

Vicky came to Longevity Health and Fitness while recovering from an L5/S1 lower back injury. At the time, she was eager to return to exercise but felt anxious about doing the wrong thing and potentially re-injuring herself. Although she missed being active, her confidence in movement was low and she needed reassurance that any exercise she did would be safe, appropriate, and well supervised.

Deirbhile, aged 67, came to Longevity Health and Fitness seeking support for ongoing lower back pain related to osteoarthritis. Her pain was beginning to affect everyday activities and reduce her confidence with movement. One of her biggest concerns was the possibility of having to give up gardening, an activity that brings her both enjoyment and a sense of independence.

Back pain relief FAQs

Gentle movement, good posture and steady strength work make a big difference. Regular exercise helps your back stay strong, reduces stiffness and keeps future flare-ups at bay. That’s why we focus on simple, guided movement – it’s a great first step toward lasting relief.

In the short term, light movement (a walk, some easy stretching) usually helps more than full rest. A bit of heat or gentle mobility work can ease stiffness, but real change comes from rebuilding strength and confidence over time.

Definitely. Gentle mobility work loosens tight muscles, improves flexibility and helps your back move more freely. It’s one of the simplest ways to feel easier and more comfortable day to day.

Many people start to feel more comfortable within a few weeks, with bigger changes building over 8–12 weeks. Everyone’s starting point is different, but consistent movement always pays off.
